I have Word 2003 when I open a doc I cant see headers and footers unless I
choose view/print layout

In Word 2002 it shows headers and footers automatically can I configure 2003
to do this?

In Word, click on Tools | Options | View | check the "White space
between pages" box | OK.

Word has never shown headers and Footers in Normal View: you have to be in
Page Layout View or Print Preview to see them. There has been no change in
this behaviour.

Word remembers the view that a document was last save and closed, so if you
save and close your documents in Page Layout View, they should reopen in
that view.
If you are opening documents that someone has been editing in Normal View,
then it will open in Normal View for you too.
