Word 2003 "Envelopes and Labels" fails to insert address into enve

I have used the Outlook 2003's contacts and/or address book entries to address
and then print individual envelopes in Word 2003 via "Tools>Letters and
Mailings>Envelopes and Labels..." for years. Just recently this technique
fails to actually insert the desired address into an "envelope." Up until
the moment that I click on the desired address within the "Contacts" file
(while both and "Outlook Address Book" and a "Personal Address Book" appear
under Word's "Show Names from the:" dropdown, for some reason they display no
names) everything seems to be working. It’s just that the desired address is
NOT inserted into the "Delivery address:" field of the "Envelopes and Labels"
dialog.

I did disable some "unneeded" XP services via "services.msc", which may or
may not have anything to do with my problem.

Software environment includes following:
Outlook 2003
Word 2003
XP Professional w/ SP2
Current Microsoft updates (Automatic Updates up and running)
ClearContext (an Outlook Plug-in)
OfficeCalendar (software to allow sharing contacts and calendars across the
internet)

First, as detailed in the KB article you refered me too, and because I'm
running Outlook 2003, I performed the following operations:
… Microsoft Office Outlook 2003
1. On the Tools menu, click E-mail Accounts.
2. Click to select View or change existing directories or address books, and
then click Next.
3. If your Outlook Address Book is listed, click Cancel, and then go to the
steps in the "How to Mark Your Contact Folder for Use with Your Address Book"
section.
4. If your Outlook Address Book is not listed, click Add.
5. Click to select Additional Address Books, and then click Next.
6. Click to select Outlook Address Book, and then click Next.
7. Click OK when you receive the prompt that the address book you added will
not start until you click Exit from the File menu.
8. Click Finish.
9. Click Exit from the File menu, and then restart Outlook.

Next, I performed following operations:
Step 2: Mark your contact folder for use with your address book
1. On the File menu, point to Folder, and then click Properties for your
folder name.
2. On the Outlook Address Book tab, click to select the Show this folder as
an e-mail address book check box, type a descriptive name, and then click OK.

Lastly, I rebooted my XP Pro PC, not simply stop and restart Outlook 2003,
then I restarted Word 2003 and attempted to “Insert Address†via both Word’s
“Insert Address†command and “Envelopes and Labels†“insert Address†command
with the result that nothing what so ever is inserted.

Put differently, I attempted to remedy the problem I described in detail in
my first post by following exactly each appropriate step in the KB article
you kindly refered me too. I do not know why Word 2003's "Insert Address"
command suddenly stopped working.

I know what the instructions say. You just copied and pasted them. The
instructions contain alternatives. You did not state which alternatives you
used nor what the status of your Contacts Folder and Outlook Address Book
Service were in the first place.
When you open the address book in Word, what appears in the "Show Names from
the:" box? What do you see when you open the address book in Outlook?

As you correctly point out, the KB article contained instructions for a
variety of alternatives. I did not “just†copy and paste them. Instead, I
copied and pasted the appropriate alternative instructions, the instructions
that applied to my particular circumstance, the instructions that I actually
did follow.

With respect to the “status†of my “Contacts Folder†and “Outlook Address
Book service†in the first place or even their status now, I’m not sure that
I know what you mean and/or where to look to ascertain this information.

displayed?

Yes I do, its just that clicking on any of the available contacts fails to
actually insert that contact's address (or anything at all) into that Word
document.

Odd. Since this used to work, can you think of any changes you made to your
configuration? For example, is Outlook your default mail program and your
default Contacts Manager for your OS?

Yes I can, but not with enough detail to be useful. Via
"Start|Run|services.msc" I disabled some (between 5 and 10) XP SP2 services
that were running but did not appear useful to me. I followed
<http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/service411.htm> as a guide as to which XP
Services could "safely" be disabled. When I say "not with enough detail to
be useful" I mean I did not record the list of services that I disabled,
there prior settings, nor do I even know the "default" setting is for each
specific service, that is, Disabled, Manual or Automatic.

Problem resolved!
I entered “Services Configuration†via “Start|Run|services.msc†and set the
following two Windows XP SP2 services to start automatically:
1. Alerter
2. Messenger

Prior to suffering this problem, I had “Disabled†both of these two services
along with a group of 5 to 10 other services.

Next I rebooted my Windows XP Pro SP2 PC. Then I started Word 2003 and a
dialog was displayed, something about my Profile and/or user name and
requesting that I provide my initials, which I did, and click “OKâ€, which I
did. Lastly I attempted to insert an Address from within Word and the
selected address was correctly inserted.
