word 2003 closes each time i close a document

Each time i close the final word document i have open the whole of word shuts
down. I'm sure it's to do with my settings but i just can't figure it out.
 
I don't have the solution, but a number of people have posted the same
question, and the typical answer is that you need to click on the lower "X"
(in the menu bar) and not the upper "X" (in the Word application frame).
However, if I have only one document open and I click on the lower "X," the
application still closes! I presume that is your problem as well. It's very
frustrating. I hope someone has the solution.
