Word 2003 automatically adding styles to stylesheet

In Word 2003 I'm finding that styles are being
automatically added to the style sheet. For example if I
make a H1 initial capitals it gets added to the list of
available styles. If I underline a word that is based on
paragraph text then paragraph underline becomes a new
style. Define styles based on your formatting has been
turned off but it hasn't made any difference.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to stop this from
happening.

Thanking you in advance.

Hi Wendy,

How are you determining that new styles are being created?
Can you give us some examples of the style names?

My best guess: you're looking at the Styles and Formatting
Task Pane and are seeing the directly applied formatting
listed along with the styles.

You can change the display by either
- choosing one of the "styles" entries from the list at
the bottom of the pane

- choosing "Custom" here and deactivating the checkboxes
at the bottom of the dialog box

- deactivating "Keep track of formatting" in
Tools/Options/Edit
