Word 2002 Problem

I have just reformatted and reinstalled Windows XP Pro with Office XP Pro. I
now have a problem that appears in Word as well as Notepad and Wordpad that
is annoying. When I type inverted commas (or quotation marks) the cursor
does not move to the next position and display the character, it remains
where it is and no character is displayed. If I press space bar, the cursor
moves on revealing the quotation mark. This is of course a huge problem when
typing. The problem wasn't there before so something has changed in the
settings. All other characters are fine, it's just the two characters on
that key, the single quotation and full quotation marks.
I can recall having this problem before but it was on another computer.

Can anyone assist?

Look at your keyboard settings, since it is effecting
several programs it is likely in the keyboard custom
settings. What keyboard do you have?

Best to re-ask this specialist question in a newsgroup for Word.

That being said, all I can suggest is look closely at all the options in
Tools/Options or other menus like this were default behaviour is set. I
don't know where this behaviour is set. Have you searched in Word's
help file for help?

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

Jim, the word is 'affecting'.

Effect means to 'bring about a change or result'
Affect means to 'have an influence on or cause a change in' - in the
sentence below it means 'to infect'.

This is how we were taught the difference

Apply the cream twice a day to the /affected/ area. If you don't notice any
/effect/ in a week go back to your doctor.

Just a friendly FYI

The setting is having the effect of altering the operation
of the keyboard.

Install the US not US International Keyboard. Word has the features of the International keyboard anyway by pressing Ctrl and the key.

Start - Control Panel - Regional And Language Options - Languages - Details and add US and remove US International

You're using the US-International keyboard layout, which is
provided to facilitate typing special characters like ä. This can
be turned off in Control Panel | Regional and Language Options |
Languages | Details | Settings.
