word 2002 font screen takes a long time to appear

In an earlier post I reported that Word 2002 was not responding when I did
Format/Font or Modified a Style. To my amazement, the Font screen comes up
but after what I'd consider an very long time (30 seconds plus). I was
prematurely closing the font screen assuming it stopped responding. What
would Word be looking for that initial request that is making take so long?
However, once it comes up it appears very quickly from that point on for
that session of Word. When I reopen Word that first font screen takes a
long time. I just upgraded to 2002 from Word 97 on my XP laptop. Is this
normal behavior for Word 2002 and XP?

One other question. On my Windows 98 machine all the font icons were TT,
with the XP machine some fonts show TT but most have an O icon but still
has the .ttf file extension. COuld someone tell me what the O stands for?

Apparently, Word '02 needs to know when you are Formating if a printer that

connecting the printer directly to the laptop and Word behaved as I would
expect it to.

I still would like to know about the "O" icon for true type fonts if anyone
has an explination.

The O is for OpenType, a newer standard. To solve your printer problem, make
sure the driver is installed on the local machine even if you'll be printing
via a network.

Yes, Word will query the printer driver in order to display a valid
font list.

You may not need the printer attach the printer directly to your
laptop but rather have the printer driver installed locally. It sounds
like the driver may be on the network. Try using removing the printer
and add it back using the Add Printer Wizard to install a local
driver.

Also, the "O" indicates the font is an OpenType font and are for
cross-platform compatibility.

if you'll be printing via a network.

I had originally installed both a Minolta 1250W and Epson Photo 820
printers on the laptop just in case I wanted to plug them in. Subsequently
I networked them off my other computer to reduce cabling. Right now they
are displayed when I view Settings/Printers. Even though I never deleted
them Word apparently had difficulty until I either actually pluged the
Minolta in and/or made it default. Is making a local printer the default
printer the key. Up until I made it default I had the Networked Minolta as
the default..and I guess that takes more time to do the font thing over the
network.

Should I just uninstall/delete these printers and then add them again? Or
just keep a local printer as default to speed things up?

Word will always format your document according to the currently selected
printer. When you start Word, it uses the Windows default printer, so this
can cause delays in opening if the default is on a network.
