Word 2000: Viewing ruler while inside a footnote

Just display the ruler before placing the insertion point inside the
footnote. You can then use the ruler as you would in the main body of the
document (for example, to add tab stops).

Thank you, Stefan.

One cautionary note that I assume applies in previous versions: In Word 2003
at least, you cannot use the ruler to format footnote text if you are in
Normal view working in the footnote pane. It does work if you are in Print
Layout view working in a footnote at the bottom of the page.

Thanks for the heads up. I haven't yet seen whether Word 2000 has a
footnote pane (just been using layout view), but I'll keep the caveat
in mind

If you are in Normal view and insert a footnote/endnote or use View |
Footnotes, a footnote/endnote pane opens at the bottom of the window. This
has been true for every Word version I've used (beginning with 2.0) and is
still true in Word 2007. The reason this is important is that the *only* way
to access and edit the Footnote/Endnote Separator or Footnote/Endnote
Continuation Separator is from the footnote pane in Normal/Draft view.

I see what you mean. It's not exactly convenient, but not the end of
the world. Surprised that it still afflicts 2003. Thanks for the
warning. Saved me lots of confusion.

I work primarily in Normal view, so it rises up to bite me quite often. The
other thing that's annoying is that, even when the insertion point is in a
Footnote Text paragraph, you don't get that style in the Style dropdown
unless you press Shift to force it to display All Styles. This makes it very
cumbersome to modify the style by example.
