Word 2000 Numbered Lists

I've created a style "Numbered List" in several templates
in Word 2000. Problem is, sometimes, more often than not,
the formatting is changed automatically when I attempt to
restart numbering. Margins, tabs, numbering, all change or
disappear. I tried all of the following to no avail:
-Reformatting the style in the template.
-Recreating the style in the template.
-Remformatting the style in the doc.
-Recreating the style in the document.
-Deleting Normal.dot
-Deleting the style from the doc/template and copying it
from another using Organizer.
-Copying and overwriting the style from another using
Organizer.
-Removing and re-attaching the template with and without
updating styles.
-Abandoning the style and using toolbar buttons and menu
options to get the number formatting.

It absolutely will not stay consisent. Sometimes the
problems happen just when the doc is open/closed, but
unfailingly when restart numbering is used.

Any solution?
