Word 2000 cursor skips to bottom of page when I hit enter

In using Word 2000, I type a line centered at the top. I then hit enter and
the cursor drops down a line for a second or two and then goes to the bottom
of the page. I have no idea what is wrong or how to correct the problem.

Go to File > Page Setup > Layout and set the Vertical Alignment
dropdown to Top -- it sounds like it's currently set to Justified.
Then click the Default button at the bottom of the dialog, and click
OK.
