Word 07 - formatting updates the following para

I've been using Word 07 quite happily for several weeks, but today have had
problems with a particular doc. Applying formatting to a para automatically
applies it to the next. I am not doing anything differently and the styles I
am using are the same ones as I've been using on about 30 previous similar
docs. I have tried changing the 'style for following para' format to no
avail. Automatically update is not checked either in the styles.

The only thing that breaks the link is if I delete any para breaks between
the text and then put the para breaks back in. It then allows me to format
each para differently. This as you can imagine is a pain, and I don't
understand why this has happened in this doc. It has never happened before. i
can't see anything in the para formatting window either to explain it. Not
even page breaks break the link - I have to delete them and then put them in
again, and then I can format the text differently.

Any ideas?
Thanks

have you tried displaying non-printing characters in this document? Are
there real paragraph breaks (¶) in there, or maybe only line breaks?

Also: Did you create this document yourself? If it consist of copied
text (from a TXT file), sometimes you can end up with not quite the
correctly encoded CR/LF for para breaks in Word (even though they're
shown to be ordinary para breaks).

Yes they are all proper para breaks. I've even searched and replaced all para
breaks with new ones to make sure. Definitely no manual line breaks.

Don't know if it was created as a txt file. Shouldn't have been - I've
received similar files from the same person and not had this problem.

Thanks
