When I restart my computer, it logs off then sits at the shutting down screen
forever until I hold the on/off button for 4 to 5 seconds then it restarts
and always asks if I want to start normally.
Is there a way around this problem? I phoned HP and they can't seem to have
the answer. They want me to ship the computer back to them for service but I
just thought I would ask here and see if someone has the answer.

You don't say how long you have had the computer and whether this was a
problem from the start, but it is usually a driver conflict or a program
hang. What equipment did you install, and you can uninstall it in device
manager if you have the driver's necessary to reinstall. Programs, just
shut them down in task manager until you find the program, often an
anti-virus program. Think what is most likely, which is what you installed
just before this problem started.

John tks for your reply:
I just bought this computer it is an HP Pavillion Dv6000 and I tried
recovery twice and it worked twice then again the same "shutting down"
hanging there problem came back.
Since then I have tried removing programs I downloaded, scanned with
AVG,AdwareSE,Spybot search & destroy but to na avail.
