when i try to download patch (810847), it keeps saying
that I need ie 6 service pack 1... which I actually have
installed already

In it's foggy way, the error is stating you already have the Q810847's fixes
installed as you've most likely already installed the IE Cumulative Patches
which have superceded it.

IE Help>About>UpdateVersions> Is Q824145 listed here? It's the latest IE
Cumulative Patch.

Best you rely on Windows Update for updates & patches you should have,
rather than picking/choosing ones you *think* you need, Tony.

I do have that latest cumulative patch...

The reason I was downloading that other patch is that
someone recommended it b/c I get page can't be displayed
errors on several websites, namely sbc.com,
verizonwireless.com (when i trylog into secure account
page) Several other secure sites come up just fine... Do
you have any idea why this might be?

thnks tony

Low-level fix is http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers.htm#dns.

Hijackware is much more likely, these days:

http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/Darnit.htm#tshoot
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm

You *must* seek updates for Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc., before each and every
use, even "right out of the box". But even then, they can't catch
everything. HijackThis
(http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred
tool to use these days. It will help to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware. **Post your files to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/,
not here.**

Also update your virus definitions and then run a full system scan. From
now on, do both daily.
