Won't play wav file larger than 1,000 kb

As an addendum to my post below about sound issues, further investigation
shows I can insert a sound file as long as it is less than one megabyte. If I
add a sound file any largerthan that it just does not play. I verified this
by starting with a 5mb sound file (which would not play) and repeatedly
editing it and trying it again. Once the file got smaller than 1 mb, it would
work perfectly.

As I said in my earlier post, this is a new problem. Presentations I
previously created with large wav files, which played perfectly on my system,
no longer play sound. I have not changed any system system settings or
PowerPoint options that I'm aware of. It is definitely not a file corruption
issue because any of these files plays normally on another computer.

I'm betting that in tools > options>general the setting for "link sounds with
filesize greater" than is set to 999kb. If so what youre seeing is a
difference between linked and embedded sounds. Is the path to the linked
sounds very long? - move the file and make it shorter ideally in the same
folder as the presentation.

Good thought, but we're talking embedded files here. And my setting is at
50,000.

Yes, perfectly! Every other aspect of sound handling on my system seems to be
normal...the problem is confined to PowerPoint.

The presentation with the sound embedded play on other computers except yours?
Try removing all files from the Windows Temp folder and see if it works.

Plays fine on other computers. I emptied the Windows temp folder as you
suggested, but no change. Thanks for your efforts...this is a real stumper to
me.

Have you tried doing a Detect and Repair in PowerPoint?

It gets REALLY odd now. After running Detect and Repair, I can now embed a
3.8 mb file (which would not work before), but when I jump up to the next
larger wav files I have saved, which are in the 25 to 30 mb range, they still
won't play.

When you double click the sound file outside of PowerPoint what do they play
in? You may also want to look here

Yes, sounds play fine in Media Player or mplay32.exe.

After reading the info site you sent me to, I even removed all other players
from my system in case there was a conflict. Still no good....although I now
suspect that the problem may be related to a new version of RealPlayer I
installed a few weeks ago.

I'm going to go back and look for a restore point and try that.

Is that what opens them up when you double click on them? Or, is it Real
Player?

Windows Media Player is my default player that opens when I double-click on
the file, but I know that PowerPoint supposedly uses mplayer32.exe.

You might want to look at that link I sent you. Real Player has a tendency
to muck up some of the settings
