Won't boot. Virus?

Tonight, Sunday, during 60 Minutes, my Win 2000 Pro (not
server) failed to boot. It makes it to about 2/3rds
through the screen with the Windows logo, then bsod
mentioning stop error 7B - boot device not accessible, I
think. (The system is at home. I'm at work sending this
message.) "Getting Started" says it is probably a virus.
None of the Safe Mode approaches worked, but running
Recovery Console from the CD-ROM is successful in getting
the system started. I am logged on as the adminstrator.
Now what do I do? How do I find and eliminate the virus?
I can't find anything useful at Symantec. Do I have to
reinstall Windows 2000?

By the way, my system is connected to the Internet using
DSL, through a router, and I'm running Norton SystemWorks
Pro 2003 and Norton Personal Firewall. Norton Antivirus
scans the computer every night. How did this happen?

Please respond to me at (e-mail address removed)

Thanks in advance.

I've seen that error numerous times and every time it's on systems with a
SCSI boot disk. Windows uses generic instructions to get to the point you
mention, but when it tries to load the "proper" SCSI driver it loses access
to the boot disk. If your system is SCSI, I'd try reinstalling/updating the
SCSI driver.

Thanks. SCSI is involved. I'll try to find new drivers.

The system had worked well for 2 years. Odd.

Thanks. But it won't boot, and Recovery Console won't let
me run any programs, just copy/delete, etc.

Pop the disk as a slave disk into some other Win2000 system,
then scan it for viruses.
