WMVs take a hit in quality through PPT

I've got some WMVs that play pristinely with Windows Media Player, but as
soon as I insert and play them in PPT, there is pronounced artifacting and
some trouble at the bottom of the screen.

I know that PPT doesn't use Windows Media Player exactly, but does anyone
have any ideas about what's going on?

First, are you resizing the video on the slide? (This can cause what you
describe.) Second, have you looked to see if there is an updated video
driver for your PC?

If you want to get deeper in to the whys you might want to read up on it
here.
