WMV files and Media player

Hi. My media player 11 on my 64bit Vista machine crashes whenever attempting
to open a .wmv file. Mp3 files seem to play fine. all microsoft demos and
webcast recordings are .wmv files. I have an alternate player, but I am
fully updated and feel i should be able to get media player to run these
files. Any one have an answer out there that doesnt involve using a 3rd
party player or installing windows xp?

on the media player newsgroup an MVP was saying that
3rd party applications install their own codecs for wmv
creating havoc with wmp11

He also presented some solutions by re-registering some files

I suggest you go over there and take a look

I have actually looked into that and I having the issue before I installed
teh other player (zune). In fact, thats why I downloaded it. I am really
thinking it could be teh 64bit thing although Im not certain. I was informed
by Live meeting support yesterday that Vista 64 has no support for .mdi files
and I have run into other program conflicts with vista 64. any other
suggestions or anyone know if this is a 64bit issue?

I found the post I was talking about. (see below) This happened to some
other folks too with other apps.
You might want to post your question in the media player and windowsmedia
newsgroups.
_____
This is all personal investigation and personal opinion. You can easily
verify these findings yourself, and this data is provided in good faith.

It appears that Satellite TV for PC is installing a private copy of wmp.dll
version 10.0.0.3802 to--
C:\Program Files\SatelliteTVforPC\2006\Elite\wmp.dll

Since Vista uses Windows Media Player version 11, you will then find that
Windows Media Player will crash or simply not start when you attempt to run
it. To undo this damage, you would at the least want to:
* Go to the Start menu
* Type "cmd.exe" in the search text bar there
* Right-click on CMD in the results list and select Run As Administrator
* Then in that command prompt type "regsvr32 wmp.dll"
You should then be able to run the player again.

This is a source of a top failure for the Vista Windows Media Player (also
identified as crash bucket number 346645088 ), which is why I felt it
merited an extra heads-up. Thanks to Vlad for letting me debug his box
(after which I bought a copy of the software myself to in order to
double-check my findings).

Thanks,
-Zach

When I attempt to open something like the little sample movies they have on
my hard drive, I get that it cant complete the operation and get code
C00D11D4.

If I try to view a wmv from online such as one of the MS live meeting
webcasts, I simply get that media player could not find a solution to the
problem and will close and get no error code.

c00d11d4 is "Error: Invalid Request".

You said crash - if it's crashing, if you look at the URL I mentioned--
http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#bucket
that will tell you how to look up the fault bucket number in the Problem
Reports and Solutions center. That's what I'm looking for here if possible.
=) That may or may not be related to your Invalid Request error, but that
one is easier to debug from my point of view.

As regards 0xc00d11d4,

are my tips/questions that should help you isolate down the problem into its
most narrow possible form. Knock on wood. =)
