WMPNetwrk.exe Application Error

This evening I installed the monthly collection of XP patches. On restarting
the PC now locks up after almost completing the startup. The keyoard and
mouse are completely locked, successive restarts make no difference. The
error message reads:

"WMPNetwrk.exe Application Error
The exception unknown software (0x06d007e) occured in the application at
location 0x7c812a5b."

Any ideas?

Can you boot into safe mode? If so remove updates through add/remove
programs and then do a system restore to the restore point before the
updates were applied. Then reapply updates one at a time.

That file is associated with WMP11.

Oh, too bad, ok what about Last known good configuration from the Advanced
Options menu - where safe mode is. Does that work? If so and you can get
back in, do a system restore, but I doubt this will work.

If not then the next option is doing a repair install.

All updates will need to be reapplied through windows update.
