Hello;

I am using Windows XP Home SP1. I tried to install some new sortware on my
machine. After installation when I rebooted I am now getting the following
error message pertaining to another program that was already installed and
workng properly. "Could not connect to WMI services. HD HeartBeat will
terminate now". Then another error message from the effected program:
"Access violation at address 04228A8 in module 'HDHeartBeat.exe'. Read of
address 00000004".

Do you know what is causing this? Is WMI damaged? Can I repair or
reinstall WMI?

Thanks very much for your help - have a great week!

What is the StartUp type for WMI set as in Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, services? Should be Manual.

Can you post a copy of the actual Report in Event Viewer. Are
there any other Warning / Error Reports immediately before or
at the same time as the Report from which you have quoted?

Please check Event Viewer for Warning / Error Reports in the System and
Application logs for when the error occurs and post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste.
Often the link will, however, say there is no further information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now
start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This
will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.

Anando and Gerry;

Thank you for your fast responses.

When typing run then Services.msc - WMI is in the Started status.

Also the Startup Type is Automatic. This is the same as on 2 other machines
that there are no problems. Since Gerry said it is suppose to be manual, I
changed it to manual and rebooted the machine. On reboot I get the same
"Could not connect to WMI services" error so I changed it back to automatic.

Gerry, I looked in the Event Viewer under Applications and System. I could
really see any message that looked like it might pertain to WMI. Can you
give me an idea of what I should be looking for in the Event Viewer.

Thanks again for your help!

These links explain the confusion:

http://www.theeldergeek.com/windows_management_instrumentation.htm

http://www.theeldergeek.com/windows_management_instrumentation_driver_extensions.htm

"Could not connect to WMI services" Is this the exact text of the error or
have paraphrased? Where exactly are you seeing this message?
Entering the exact phrase in Google gets Nil returns!

If there is an error recorded in Google you need to look for an Error or
Warning within a minute of the time the problem occurred. It could be
an Information Report but these are unusual. You should not look for
any particular form of words. Most entries in the logs occur during the
boot or shutdown processes. They are unusual between the two, unless
something goes wrong.

Gerry;

Yes, the error message words I am giving you are the exact words. Here is
the exact error message box:

Error
Could not connect to WMI Services
The help file shows how to detect and troubleshoot this
HD HeartBeat will terminate now
OK

More information -
I have a program installing called Hard Drive HearBeat that monitors my hard
drives S.M.A.R.T attributes and gives me a warning if it looks like the hard
is going to fail soon. When I reboot the machine the HD Heartbeat program
automatically starts and I believe that this is when the error message
appears.

The program help file gives a little information on how to troubleshoot this
WMI error message but it is very confusing and hard to understand. After
this error appears and I click OK this error appears next -

HD HeartBeat
Access violation at address 042208A8 in module 'HDHeartBeat.exe'. Read of
address 00000004.
OK

I read the two links that you gave me about the description of WMI.

Everything was working good with no error messsages when I booted UNTIL I
installed some software that I think was bad. I have now uninstalled that
software.

If WMI has become damaged, is there a way to download a new file, etc. from
Microsoft or reinstall WMI some way?

Thanks for your help!
