wkimgsrv.dll and adaptec file saver

G

George Applegate

I recently installed defender on some pc's in our network. We have a
backup software that saves data to an external drive based on when
files change - you can tell how many vesions you want to keep, etc.

Problem is, as soon as I installed defender, I started getting
application error messages saying that the adaptec file saver software
could not back up C:\program files\microsfoft works\wkimgsrv.dll

Does anyone have any idea what this is all about? I went into my
adaptec file saver software configurations and changed it to not even
back up this directory (microsoft works), but it still gives the
error???

I had used ms anti-spyware and was getting along fine, but thought I
should update to the defender version. Now I'm in a pickle.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Does the behavior remain if you uninstall Defender?

Steve.

I uinstalled defender but didn't test it just by itself; I confess I
should have. After I uninstalled defender, I then reinstalled the
prior version of MS Anti-spyware, and the error continued. So I am
wondering if something hs been changed in the registry.

This has happened on every PC I've done so far. And it always gives
the error "unable to write to file" (which is on a separate storage
unit). It is always the file C:\program files\microsoft
works\wkimgsrv.dll

It makes me wonder if it has something to do with that file, but I
can't imagine what. But it's that same file on all the pc's.

Thanks for asking. Actually, I have uninstalled the adaptec file
saver and the defender functions correctly, but I guess I didn't try
it the other way. Good suggestion. If it functions without windows
defender on, what does that tell us?

Like I said, going back to MS Anti-spyware, the problem recurred.

George,

Would you say this repro's consistently among your computers?
i.e. You install WD on a computer and then immediately see this behavior?

thanks!

Steve,

Yes, as soon as WD is installed then I start getting the mesage from
the adaptec file saver program. It is always the same file. Adaptec
is a file saver software that backs up files to an on-line external
raid storage system.

I can pick folders/files to include/exclue. Even if I start fresh,
and create a new list of folders and I totally omit the c:\program
files\microsoft works folder and all files within...the error
continues to occur.

I have unistalled/reinstalled adaptec. I then uninstalled windows
defender and went back to MS anti-spyware. I haven't had time yet to
try to uninstall WD and see if the problem persists. But it didn't
start until I installed WD.

Very weird.
