Everytime that I open Microsoft Word, it tries to load WkDetect.exe in
my Startup group. Is there anywhere
I can go to make it stop trying to load it EVERY time
I open Miccrosoft Word. I unchecked the only reference
to "updates" that I could find in Word "options", but that didn't
help. Thanks ... Michael Mauzey

"A background process that checks automatically for Microsoft Works updates when you are connected to the Internet."

Go to Options or Preferences and disable Auto Update.

There is no such option available ... I already looked.

Hi

WkDetect.exe is listed in msconfig>startup - uncheck it and then reboot your
PC. Then use the following file to clear any disabled entries:

Thanks ... but you guys aren't understanding ... after
I clear it and delete it, Microsoft Word tries to put it back into my
Startup ("Run") settings everytime I open
Microsoft Word. I know how to clear it and I know how to delete the
reference in MS Config ... what I need to know is how to make
Microsoft Word quit trying to put it back everytime it is opened .
There are NO OPTIONS available in Microsoft Word to "disable
auto-update".

There are NO OPTIONS available in Microsoft Word to "disable
auto-update".

That option should be in Works (not Word), under options. The actual loader
is starting "tasks" which then start WkDetect.exe. if that doesn't work,
find WkDetect.exe, right click on it, choose "rename", and change the
extension (exe) to old, or anything, click OK, Yes and out. If you don't
have extensions showing you need to make changes in Control Panel, Folder
Options, View tab, scroll down to uncheck the box "Hide extensions for known
file types" to reveal the ".exe"

If you get an access error, you will need to not have anything running with
Works at all to do this.

Thanks .. I went to MS Works and unchecked the update box, rebooted;
but when I opened Word, it still tried to install WkDetect.exe in my
Startup

I can't find the WkDetect.exe file .. I think that I deleted it a
while back in a fit of utter frustration. Thanks for trying ...

Are you using Worksuite 200*?

If so, I can show you how to ONLY install Word. What is happening is, since
you deleted that file, it is trying to setup WorkSuite again, and you cannot
make changes to the preferences because of that removal.

You can try to uninstall it all totally, reinstall, choosing Word only, then
make the options changes I stated before, and removing any of it from
MSCONFIG and choosing the selective startup feature. If you find you ONLY
want Word (don't feel you need the Calendar, etc), post back.
