WITH OUT using the not in list event

Hi,
Does anyone have a example code (even on a site) where WITH OUT using the not in list event but maybe another event that works simular to to this but have the chioce to either add the default value to the combo box or not. The not in list event will not let you add a item that is not in the comboBox. I want to use the comboBox for the common entrys and not have to search the long list in the comboBox. Right now I have to go and update the lookup list all the time.
