There is a difference in cost between a retail XP CD and an OEM
XP CD, which reflects the difference in the vendor who owes you
support. With a retail XP CD, M$ will give you some support;
with an OEM XP CD, M$ has no responsibility to give you support.

M$ will, of course, sell you some help, but they have absolutely
no obligation to give you free support. Read your license.

As for your specific problem, you may want to restore your system
to a time before you installed this update. Start with XP's Help
facility, then search for system restore, and try a recent
restore point. And, for future reference, note that backup is
a good thing.
