Deej

I've just spent the best part of 1/2 a day googling away to try and
come up with an answer to the problems that I've having with my
wireless network but alas it was to no avail. So I decided that I'd
try to chance my arms with one of you knowledgable fellows in here.

I'm trying to set up a wireless network. Just using 2 usb safecom
wireless thingummyjigs (I hope my use of the word 'thingummyjigs' will
help you guess the level of help that I'll need from one or more of
you :))

I'm using XP home with SP2 on both machines, a laptop and a desktop
which has the internet connection with the aim of sharing files and my
cable modem (This is connected via an ethernet card)

I've done the twiddling around and so far have managed to get to the
stage where I can see a wireless connection in my systray. Its peer to
peer with an excellent signal strength. After having done a bit of
googling I've set the IP manually on the wireless connection to
192.168.0.1 for the desktop and 192.168.0.7 for the laptop. The subnet
mask is 255.255.255.0 for both.

I've opened a command prompt and managed to ping each machine from the
other, ICS is enabled on the machine with the internet connection and
yet I still can't browse the net from the laptop but I can share files
between the 2 computers.

Anybody have any suggestions ?

If you configure the IP settings manually on the laptop, make all of
these settings:

IP Address: 192.168.0.x (1<x<255)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS Server = 192.168.0.1 or your ISP's DNS server

If that doesn't solve the problem, disable ICS on the desktop and then
re-enable it. Don't configure the desktop's IP settings manually.
ICS makes the right settings, and changing them can cause problems.

Steve, I could kiss you!

That did the trick. Many thanks for the help.

Thanks for the offer, but I'd have a hard time explaining it to my
wife. :-)

You're welcome, Darren. I'm glad that my suggestion helped you solve
the problem.
