I have an old laptop that only has USB 1.0. Will any of those USB
dongle thingies allow me to connect? (I'd rather not do a pcmcia
card.) thanks

Hi
Even if a the device is USB2 802.11g it is downward compatible.
Jack (MVP-Networking).

Maybe, maybe not. Does the USB dongle you're looking at say it supports USB
1.0?

Actually a maximum of 12 megaBITS/second (Mbps or Mb/s or Mbit/s), not
megaBYTES/second (MBps or MB/s or MByte/s). 12 Mb/s is 1.4 MB/s.

correct! used a big b when I should have used a small one!!

Make life easy so nobody has to guess. Write it out as in:
xx bytes/sec
and
xx bits/sec
and never mind trying to invent a new abrev.
