Im thinking of buying a laptop and i wanted to know any good wireless routers
out there that i can use to access the internet some good cheap ones if
possible, that i can connect to my home computer and use it to wirelessly
access the internet with my laptop.
 
Hello,

Linksys WRT54G is probably the most popular kind. It is widely used, so you
can get support for it easily. Stay away from any 802.11n/Wireless-N
routers. That is a new draft standard that is not an official standard yet
and will not be for probably another year. Go with 802.11g/Wireless-G since
that is the most popular and is an approved standard.

my favorite routers are those by Netgear.

These are the cheapest, I think. My whole network consists of Netgear
products, working very well, and I'm going to upgrade to Wireless soon.

Linksys WRT54GL V1.1 The "GL" version is usually only on Internet stores but
allows you to flash the ROM chip with custom software that's plentiful. and
with more features.

Wireless routers are not dependent on the os you're running on your
computer. It could be MS or Linux or MAC. Just go get a cheapie and have
fun. I run a Linksys WRT54G.
 
Personally I run Linksys's WRT54GS with speedbooster..I have had it a couple
of yrs..works great and wife can connect anywhere on the
property.....software very simple to install,,use and configure..Just my 3
cents

Just to add my 2 cents... I'm using a Linksys WRT54G v4... I've been using
it for a couple of years and it's been rock solid. Can't say the same for
the Netgear router it replaced when I returned the NG router after less than
a week of dropped connections to my ISP. (T'was a heat issue... and there
were guys who were adding external fans to cool the router... way beyond the
call, imho...)

Yes, the WRT54G is good. You won't find any specified distance, as the
range you get with any WiFi connection depends on the structure you're in
(material, number of walls, wiring....) and other environmental conditions
(interference from other WiFi networks, other radio frequency emitters....).

The configuration and orientation of your laptop can also influence range at
any time.

Generally, expect to be able to get a usable signal 100 feet from the router
for normal residential indoor purposes, within 50 feet will be better. YMMV

In an open warehouse, I have gotten a (barely) useable connection at 250
feet.
That is a Linksys BEFW11S4 with a high gain antenna kit. It is mounted high
in the center of the building and has an unimpeded path to the laptops.
In a normal office or home, 50-125 feet is about all you should reasonably
expect.
It really depends on how many walls/floors/doors are between and what they
are made of.
You can get a high gain antenna kit for most routers, and some external
adapters have an antenna.
The internal antenna varies by manufacturer, but isn't generally as good as
an external adapter with an antenna.
I have 2 wireless routers in my house.
The first is in my office with my cable modem.
The other is hardwired to the main router and is located at the other end of
the house.
I can access either with my laptop from almost anywhere in the house, but I
pick the one with the better signal strength.
