Wireless Network intrusion

I have a home network set up to share the internet with 2 computers. One is
wired to a wireless hub and the other computer accesees the hub from down
stairs via a wireless card. I was checking the MShome workgroup and found a
unknown connection labeled georges laptop on my network. I have disconnected
the wireless hub and wired the connection from my modem directly into the
upstairs computer until I can remove the unwanted laptop connection on the
workgroup. How can I remove the laptop, it doesn't let me delete it from the
network. What should I do to make sure this doesn't happen again? I found
that the firewall was disabled, and I enabled it on both computers after I
found this laptop connection. Will this prevent them from getting back on my
network if I can get it removed? Thanks for any info anyone can provide.

You need to configure WEP or WPA on your wireless rounter to keep outsiders
from getting inside. Check the documentation that came with your router and
your computers' wireless network cards to see which you can use. WPA is
better if all device support it but WEP is better than leaving the door
open.

Hi
If another Wireless Signal is propagating in your Wireless reception range
it might appear in your available Wireless Network. Nothing is wrong with
this that is the way Wireless technology works (the Air around us does not
discriminate signals).
Using the measures of security is the step to insure that others can not use
your signal, and vice versa.

Following on what was written re MAC address.

You should set the Access Point to allow access only to specific MAC
addresses.

These are printed onto every Wireless Card so look at each one and write
down the MAC address and enter them into the AP.

You can still 'see' other PCs on the same channel as your, howevre they
won't get through to your network or gain internet access.

Thank you for the help with this situation. I have a D-link 624 router and a
wireless D-link card for 802.11G connections. When I went to my MSHome page
on my computer, thats when I saw that someone was on the network that I don't
know. When I set up the wireless network I wasn't aware of all the security
measures I needed to put in place due to my lack of knowledge on networking.
I don't know if who ever that was on my network was able to access my
computer hard drives, but I hope they didn't. I have checked the sites that
I went to and input passwords and info (when I think they were on the
network) and so far I haven't had any unauthorized activity on those sites. I
found the Windows firewalls weren't enabled when I saw this laptop on the
network so I enabled them but I worry they were able to hack both computers
before I caught them on the network and enabled the firewall. I will
definitely go to these website links that you all have provided and try to
secure my network now that I know from the info how to secure it. Thanks
again for the help on this matter.
