wireless network connects ok but no internet access

G

guruabhi

I am able to connect to network using dialup and have internet access
but when I connect using wirless network connection, I am able to
connect , but cannot open any internet site from browser starting with
www.or with IP address.

The status of the network connection is ok. Have checked IE's
connections tab, run winsockXPfix.exe and reset the TCP/IP.
Also reinstalled the wirless card driver but cannot open any web site

Any suggestions? Ideas will be really helpful

Thanks in advance.

Post more info on your network setup. What are u using for internet sharing?
what do u mean, when connect using dial-up?

Connect using dial-up is using a earthlink and the telephone line which
allows internet access
For the wirless, I am able to connect to the network but unable to
access any website. I have a intel pro wireless card in my laptop and
connect using comcast and netgear.

Thanks in advance.

Abhijit,

How do you know that you're connecting to the network? Can you ping, or access
anything, when connected?

Please describe, with more detail, how everything connects to each other, and
what make and model network equipment is involved.

What do you mean by "cannot open any internet site from browser starting with
www."? Can you open any internet sites at all? Can you ping anything by name,
or by ip address?

Have you activated ICS? got to start, connect to, show all connections.
Right click on the dial up icon. click on the advanced tab and activate
internet sharing. Make sure the other PC's/laptops are set to receive an IP
address automatically.

I cannot open internet sites, but can open my office outlook web access
( I guess that means I am able to connect to the network)
Cannot ping anything by name or ip address.

I am not sure about the make and model network equipment involved, but
it is netgear equipment . I have only one laptop with XP(no other
computer, should I still activate ICS ), which has the intel pro
wireless 2915ABG network connection.

I also tried connecting to the free Wi-Fi zone available from the city
and have the same problem.
I tried installing the driver for intel pro wireless 2915ABG network
connection but still have same problem.

Thanks in advance
Abhijit

Abhijit,

OK, you can connect, and you can get Outlook web to work (can you get Outlook
email to work too?). This still sounds like an LSP / Winsock problem.
winsockXPfix, and TCP/IP reset, are only 2 possible solutions out of the 6 I
know of. Try the other 4, one at a time.

Yes the outlook web email works.
I also tried other web sites which do not have www in the url address
like http://webbranch.techcu.com and they open up fine.

One more info, when I do ping 216.239.39.99(the IP address of google
server) I receive back 4 packets, with no loss of data, but when I do
ping www.google.com it just hangs in there.
Also when I type http://216.239.39.99 in the browser, the website does
not open up.

I will try out the solutions in your link

Thanks for all the help

open

Thanks for all the help.

I realised one more thing today morning that, when I turn off the
Norton personal firewall or keep the Norton Internet security level to
low , the internet access is fine. Does this mean there is some problem
with the Norton personal firewall or firewall rules as they call it.

Thanks
Abhijit

Abhijit,

It's good that you can relate your problems to the NPF security level.

NPF has numerous settings that you need to make, with different values for each
security level ("paranoia"). This is a case where you need to carefully
identify your symptoms, then RTFM and see what the NPF settings are that affect
the symptoms. This is not a problem, it's the way firewalls (in general) and
NPF (in particular) are designed.

Thanks a lot for all the help
Will check out all the NPF settings

I experienced the same issues today - moved my desktop (WINXP; HP) to another
room and hooked up the wireless (DLINK). I access the wirless router (LYNKSYS
Wireless G; COMCAST Cable) manually entered all the IP settings: IP
192.168.1.101 || GATEWY: 192.168.1.25 || DNS 4.2.2.2 I have tried all the
tricks I know to make this work. The IP 192.168.1.1 pings fine.. google
doesn't ping.

SInce it worked yesterday and not today after the move I am sure its a
setting somewhere. it used to configure the IP's automatically... I hate
moving pc's -- they seem to have minds of their own when moved...Please
advise! am at your mercy...

Hey Barbara

Your wireless router doe sit have a built in adsl modem?

if so check the green dsl light is on at the front of it, should stay green
if it is picking up dsl. Then log into the router via the webbrowser and
make sure it is connected, i think it is under status? And it will have a
button that you can press to connect.

It sounds to me that your talking to the router fine but the router is not
connected to the internet. that's what i am getting at. Hope that points you
down the right track. Oh and dnot forget to make sure it is connected to the
wall socket of your phone line with the adsl filter.
