Wireless Help

Vista Home Premium on a new Compaq laptop.
I cannot get the laptop wireless to connect to my new LinkSys home wireless
router. This router is a Vista Compatible (calls it out in VIsta and states
so on the box). According to the LinkSys website it have the latest firmware
installed (v8).
Was on tech support for 3 hours.
They could do nothing.
The router works with the DSL moden just fine with a hard wire connection.

So .. there must be some kind of interference signal.
The SSID shows up every once in a while on the laptop and it shows all bars
green, but will not connect using Vista connection method or using manual
method.
Tried several combinations of unsecured, WEP different strengths and nothing
works.

So how do I find out if I have and where I have interference?
Is there some inexpensive meter?
Is there some wireless channel that works better.
Tried several already.
Do not want to spend weeks trying all combination and permutations of router
setup.

Any meaningful suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
