How can i delete all the entries in My Network Places and Network Neighbor
hoods and just start over to create my netowrk? I have had to format and re
do some computers and i may have the workgroups wrong or some other
settings. I think if i could just start from the beginning i may be better
off. Would it hurt to delete entries from Me Netork Places. I am new to this
and dont want to delete any hard drives.

I have a small network that i am having some problems with.
I have all three computers online and getting to the WEB, i just can't get
them to see each other. My main computer (Athlon) sees the guest computer
(Win98) and can get to the files. My laptop sees the Win98 computer in My
Network Places, but it cant get to the files. Everything is set to share but
its not working. Is there a protocol i need to install?

DLink DI-524 Wireless router
My main computer.. Athlon 1700 running XP Pro. it is wired
My guest computer running Win 98...it is wired
My laptop running XP Home...it is wireless

thanks for the assistance

Make sure that all computers on your network are in the same workgroup. If
there is any firewall software, make sure that it is configured so that it
trusts all computers on your LAN. Try pinging your workstations, sometimes
that will kick start your network.

I am not sure i have pinged my workstations before. Would it hurt if i
deleteed the entries in my network places and network neighbor hood and
started over.
I would like to start over by creating new new netowrk places or setting up
a new home or office network. Some of my workgroups may be named
differently. I was wondering if starting from scratch would be easier and
less confusing....thanks

The things in your network places are just shortcuts; removint them will not
hurt, but it does not fix one thing.
However, "some of my workgroups..."..are you sure you need more than one? If
so - I would get a domain controller and fix it thoroughly.

For a typical home network, you need one workgroup, all systems need the
same workgroup name.

It's just very unclear what you want to get done, or what is wrong. Does it
malfunction?

I only need one workgroup. This is a learning experience to me and I am not
sure what i am doing. I noticed i had one called HOME and one called MSHOME.
I have a computer in one but not the other, so i think if I start from
scratch and jot down some notes maybe i can get everything working.
I had all this working before when everything was on a wired router. Ever
since i got the wireless router i have had problems. I can get the two
computers that are still wired trough the router to see each other, but the
wireless computer doesn;t see them. Anyway, i appreciate the help,,,stay
tuned for more confusion on my part....

Workgroups are purely an organizational device; their being different will
not stop you from connencting.

Do NBTSTAT-R to reset the netbios name cache (note this IS case-sensitive,
unusually for Windows)

Then wait 15 min for the name-resolution to re-establish itself.

Then try connecting with a command of the form:

net use H: \\servername\sharename

If this works, problem solved. Network Places is often unreliable.

If not, try:

net use \\IP_ADDRESS\sharename -though this format will not work on 98.

In general I'd suggest putting the shared files on one machine, and making
that the only one with shares. Probably the XP Pro box would be the best one
to use. Then put a password on the guest account of this box, so this has to
be supplied to access the shares. (that's assuming you are using the default
Simple Sharing)

Hope this helps.

I really apprecaite your help with this. However if you have noticed some of
my previous posts i am not very knowledgeable with networking. I am sure
the commands you mentioned would work if I knew where to put them.
I had this network up and running until last week when my main computer
crashed and crashed hard. I had to format and now starting to reload
everything. I tried everything i knew to do, to not have to format, but my
limited knowledge couldnt help me....I was hoping that XP would see what it
needs to see and set things up for the network...I will go back and search
microsoft data base for setting up a network with 98 and XP..I will keep
trying and eventually i will
get it to work. Like i said i had it working at one point. I do appreciate
your help, it just may be a bit over my head...sorry

Run the commands from a command prompt such as START>RUN then enter in the
dialog box "CMD". You will open another window that looks like an old DOS
screen. Type the commands from there.
