Wired 8 port router/firewall

I am looking for a wired 8 port router/firewall, for a home network, to
share files/printers and to share a cable modem connection, between 6
computers.

Does the NETGEAR FVS318 do this?..I am a bit confused with the all
references to 'VPN'.

Yes that would be the model you want.

VPN just means the device supports secure network tunneling protocols.
