Good morning, I just purchased a new 80GHD and a new Win XP Pro 2 OS. When
I setup XP it assigned F: for the drive number. I was told that I need to
wipe and reinstall to get the assigned drive to be C:. So I went into my
bios and made my 1st boot to be CD-ROM. I saved and restarted my PC. It
started from the CD-ROM, the went directly to XP that is running on drive F:.

Will someone please give me the step by step to wipe and reinstall from the
CD-ROM, running NTFS, or point me to a link that will tell me what I need to
know? I figure that I'll need to unplug my CD burner and my 2nd HD. I'll
just turn off the USB devices via the bios.

Many thanks,
Badclown

"Just turning off usb devices thru the BIOS" doesnt cut it....You need to
physically
unlug all but the cdrom, new hd(set the plastic jumper pins correctly),mouse
and keyboard.Anything else, printers, hds, etc will ruin the OS
installation,sound
and video card are ok...Set the bios to boot to xp cd,install xp cd,at xp cd
boot screen,select,install xp,new copy,delete the partition(s),create
one,then
let xp format and install. If you purchased a xp upgrade cd,you'll be required
to briefly install it to qualify for the upgrade,it leads you thru well.

You have installed Windows XP on your Second Hard Disk Drive. In this case,
XP has automatically assigned the next available letter to the new partition,
which is F in your case. Now the problem is,

Your First Hard Disk is the Primary Master Disk and is also the System
Partition and F Drive is your Primary Slave or Secondary Master/Slave (depend
on your settings) and is also your Boot Partition. There is no way to change
the Drive Letters of System and Boot Partitions without re-formatting.

Solution is:
Before anything, you must check that the Windows XP CD is bootable.
=============================================

1. Unplug your first hard disk (which will be your current Primary Master)
2. Set your new 80GB Hard Disk Drive as Primary Master and old hdd to Slave.
3. Now, boot from CD-ROM (set BIOS setting - First Boot Device - CDROM)
4. Install Windows XP on your 80GB Hard Disk's First Partition or you may
re-create the new partition at the time of setup.

Now, the First Partition that you will create on your Primary Disk will be
the C Drive.

Let me know your comments!
