I REALLY don't want WinXP Pro to power-off my system when it quiesces!
There MUST be a way to prevent that! Can someone supply a registry
change?

Thanks.

"Quiesce" according to the Oxford English Dictionary means "to be quiet
or to subside". What do *YOU* mean?

XP may put the PC in hibernate or sleep mode, this can be disabled. Never
heard of it shutting the PC off due to lack of activiity over a period of
time.

Then sent it to Standby instead of telling it to Shutdown.
Sorry. I left a sentence out of my note. When I "shut-down" WinXP, I
would like it to NOT power-down my system, merely sit there! I'LL deal
with the power where required. Given that previous versions of the OS
did NOT power the system down, merely showing a screen telling me it was
safe to shut down the system, I'm sure it's a registry entry that can be
tweaked to prevent the behavior.

Thanks.

Or if you set a screensaver, it won't quiesce.

It won't "quiesce" anyway. "Quiesce" means "to be quiet" or to "subside"
It might Exit, or go to Standby, or to Hibernate, but it won't
"quiesce". I don't know why the OP or you are using this word!

The "power off" of a quiescent machine is called Hibernation. Go into Power
Options and set Hibernation to Never. Standby is what you are after. It
powers down the quiescent machine, but does not turn it off.

Actually the "previous versions" of Windows "Powered off" the hardware
also, IF the hardware was APCI compliant. It would appear from your
posts that you NOW are the owner of APCI compliant hardware AND Windows
works as it should! What you want to do is BREAK it! Easiest way would
be to bugger it up in the BIOS I suppose.

Thanks, tried it, but no joy!

Actually. The hardware is the same - just upgraded a Win98 system
(which did NOT power-off when Windows was shut down) to WinXP Pro (SP2)
which DOES! I'd like it to stop. It's GOTTA be a registry setting!
