I have 500 Winnt & WIN98 nodes, i want to upgrade them to
XP. What is the best method automated or manual with
rollback feature

There is no "roll back" feature unless you visit each computer
and use the "Add or Remove Programs" applet in Control Panel
to uninstall Windows XP.
This assumes you are performing an "upgrade" over Windows 98.
