WinXP Update Gone Wrong?

This is strange. A couple of days ago I downloaded a large group of
updates for Windows XP sp2. All was fine, nothing else was installed on
the computer. Late today IE7 began displaying several websites in
nothing but plain Jane HTML and text. Outlook Express will not display
my email msgs., but shows each message as an attachment; nor can I view
newsgroup msgs., ergo my visitation here using Thunderbird.

All of this, so far, appears HTML related. I tried downloading IE7 and
reinstalling it; but that did nothing. I even had to use Foxfire to
download it because IE7 screwed the page up so much I couldn't even
download. I cannot download anything from any other website either.

How could an XP update cause this problem? I also have seen cvtres.exe
running, which at times takes up to 97% of cpu resources.

Use system restore to restore to a point before the updates. See if you
still have the problem.

If you updated several days ago why would the problem wait before the
problem surfaced? Perhaps you are making a connection that is not there?

Your reference to cvtres.exe is your real query!

What are your anti-virus and anti-spyware arrangements? The link below
explains why the question may be relevant:

On my computer I have two instances of cvtres.exe. Please post details
from your system of the version number and the folder where they are
located. The last alteration seems to have been made in October 2007.

Are the any errors or warnings in Event Viewer? You can access Event
Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, and
Event Viewer.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Start | Default Programs
Make sure IE has all its defaults.
