I just installed SP2 and each time I boot the first thing I get is a
gearsec has encountered a problem ... this is the error message it
gives:

szAppName : gearsec.exe szAppVer : 1.0.0.3 szModName : unknown
szModVer : 0.0.0.0 offset : 0012e86c

Does anyone know what it is? It's located in the temp directory.

I also turned the automatic updates off but every boot it asks if I
want it turned on. Enuff to drive one crazy. It also loads the
viruscan icon on the lower taskbar but I have McAfee running and need
to turn the Microsoft scanner off.

TIA

Bob

According to 5600 Google hits it's Gear Software's
Recording Engine

"What does it do?
gearsec.exe - DVD x COPY , itunes and Power Quest's Drive
Image are the most popular programs that utilize this
software"

However, the temp directory seems like an awfully odd
place for it to be.

The message says that a program that has the name "gearsec.exe" is causing a
problem it may be a virus or spy program that interferes with the load up of
the windows operating system. The "szAppVer : " is probally the version # of
the program & the rest is where it is loaded in memory (the offset
hexadecimal #).
You can solve this problem if you create a restore point then remove the
offending program using search to find it and deleating it and restarting the
system. If the program is necessary to run one of your applications you can
go back and restore the system but if not you can clean the "trash can" and
solve the problem. Good Luck

P.S. Tell me if you have any success!

Windows XP does not come with an AV scanner.

Thanks to all for the responses ...

I went to CTRL Panel and selected admin-services and found gear there
and unchecked running at startup and selected manual setting. That
stopped the problem at startup and I tried drive image and ez-cd
creator and they seemed to work fine so I guess that took care of the
problem.

I also unchecked security center as I use ZoneAlarm firewall and
McAfee virus and the icon disappeared from the taskbar so that seemed
to handle that one also.

Thanks a lot for the info ...

Bob
