WinXP serious slowdown ??

W

wreckingcru

I have a gateway laptop with Centrino 1.6, 512mb RAM & 60gb HDD (~12 gb
free) with XP Pro.

A coupla days ago, the system froze, so I did a hard reboot. While the
reboot, i immediately noticed how long the boot up took (especially on
the 'Windows XP Pro' with the scrolling bottom bar).

When I login, explorer.exe takes forever to load and here's the
strangest thing - when i load task manager, there are a ton of
processes (all accounted for, no spyware/virus/trojan), but none of
them have an owner. There are blanks in the "username" column. If I
give the system ~10-12min, eventually the columns fill up, but it's
weirdly disturbing.

I tried a chkdsk /r on restart - takes forever - I started at 1am, and
at 6am it was on step 5 "verifying free disk space", and when i checked
again at 8am, it was just stuck at 94%. I eventually just rebooted the
system, skipped the chkdsk and logged in.

Even tried a defrag - never went past '1% compacting files'
.....actually the first time I tried it, I started before I went to bed
- when I woke up 8 hours later, it was still stuck at 24%.

Any clues what's going wrong here??

Hi,
I looked at the event viewer - but I'm not sure what I should be
looking at. I see a few CDROM failures etc...

The system is performing like its running on 64mb ram or something,
even videos are jerking and chopping (audio and video)

W

wreckingcru

Another point - I constantly monitor the task manager for any
suspicious CPU usage, but there is none. Everything seems to be taking
little CPU time, it does appear that IE, explorer, ZoneAlarm is
consuming a LITTLE excessive memory, but they aren't consuming any CPU
cycles...

NotMe

Have you checked to be sure there were no changes made in BIOS.
I have seen what you are describing when the CPU Cache (L1-L2) is disabled
in BIOS.
Have you checked to see how much RAM Windows shows as available?
Have you checked your virtual memory settings?
Have you actually scanned for Virus and malware?
Some will insinuate themselves into seemingly 'normal' system
files/processes and everything running 'looks' normal.

W

Hey,
BIOS looks fine - no changes.
Windows is still seeing 512mb ram - which is right.
Virtual Memory is set to 1gb-2gb.
Did a complete virus/spyware scan (NAV and PestPatrol)

Looks like it's a bad sector/cluster

I tried the nitwits at Gateway Support who had 3 options 1) Reformat,
2) More Memory and 3) Buy better spyware (I have Pest Patrol Pro) from
their software store.

The 2nd and 3rd are wrong, because I know my system is Virus/Spyware
free. Looks like it's a bad sector issue - but can that cause such an
intense slowdown of the system?

I can't even watch videos, they only play for 2 seconds, while it
"rebuffers" so as to speak, both audio and video. It almost behaves
like i have only 16mb or so of ram, instead of 512mb ....

Is there any other option than to reformat - I use a dual boot with
Win/Linux using the Linux based bootloader for multi-OS loads. If I
have to reformat, I'm going to image the Windows partition, and then
format the partition - and then reimage the OS back on.

Would this work?

It's possible that the hard drive does not have enough contiguous free
space, and the system freeze just made matters worse by leaving more trash
on the hard drive and fragmenting the existing free space.
If this seems to be the case, and you can get into Internet Explorer, try
deleting the temporary internet files using Tools - internet options -files
as a first step. Then you might search for *.tmp files. If the number is
quite large, they may also be contributing to the problem. A word of caution
concerning *.tmp files is in order. In theory, they should be non essential,
and you can freely delete them. In practice, it seems that some lazy
programmers ran out of other suffixes, and may have used .tmp for files that
cause problems when deleted.

A bad sector can cause problems, but generally the block that contains it is
marked bad and ignored. A good HD OEM utility will usually substitute a
spare good block or sector for a bad block or sector.

Hi,

I have got the same problem and I wonder if you have any clue to
solved?

Thanks

What is running in the background? Use this small tool:

Windows XP Startup Programs Tracker
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_u.htm#xp_util

In the meantime, run this combo:

Run Ad-Aware SE, Spybot, CWShredder and HijackThis:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html

Note: Update the first two programs, once installed, before running.

Free Online Virus Scan

Good luck and keep us posted!

No Virus.
No Spyware.
All standard processes.

I feel like it's an issue of bad clusters on my hard drive. Im
wondering how I can fix that without having to reformat. I use a dual
boot with Linux and use the GRUB bootloader, so that's going to be
messy.

Hi, if it's a bad drive then you will either see entries in the event veiwer
or you might find that instead of runiing at udma you could be running at
pio. Go to device manager and look in advanced settings under primary ide
channel. Aslo run checkdisk and ensure that scan and attampt recovery of bad
sectors is ticked. Once that is done look again in event viewer for
winlogon...

I got the defrag to work without issues. Chkdsk /r worked fine (in
fact, I tried multiple chkdsks with various flags) and it reported no
errors or bad clusters.

I have a dual boot on the same drive with Linux. I logged into the
Linux partition and that *too* is running really slow....so it appears
to be a hardware issue right? I wonder what good reformatting the
computer would do anyway?

CPU/ HDD/ Memory ?? What's screwing it up...?

After you've eliminated Malware infestation, Disk corruption or
fragmentation I would run a benchmarking program on the PC.
You can use the online testing offered by PCPitStop.Com. They
have a generic test that compares your system's hardware to
results of similar hardware platforms. It can help isolate which
area of PC operation is below expected values.
