WINXP Pro hangs at "Windows is starting up"

When re-booting my HP 5150 desktop running WINXP PRO, the PC gets to
the "Windows is starting up message and will go no further. If I power
the machine off/on it starts up perfectly.

I've check it for viruses & trojans using AVGfree. -clean
I've done a diskcleanup, defrag & chkdsk - clean
I've cleaned the registry & other stuff with CCleaner - clean.

I think I need to know how to see the startup script as it's running to
determine where it's having the trouble. Can someone help with that.

Any other ideas are also sought.

Thanx in advance.

eTrust firewall could cause that. But it'd want to go into Safe Mode after the
failed boot before it would successfully boot on restart from Safe Mode (Win
98SE). The tvdebug.log file is a damn problem, and remnants of it can still be
found in the autoexec.bat in msconfig...make sure tvdebug is unchecked, if you
have uninstalled eTrust (ZA) firewall in the past.

Any recent HW adds ? Or recent updates ? When I've had that problem it's
been hw / driver related.
Power off/on resets ALL the hw , but reboot didn't " fully init (??) "
the problem device.
The quickest way for me was to open the box and pop out unneeded cards,
then add back one at a time until hang. Or if still hangs try another
video card.
