winxp home statup problem

I recently repartitioned my main disk, reformatting and re-installing XP
complete with SP2 and later updates from Microsoft. I experienced problems
during installation of basic XP - system froze with 39 minutes to go - which
a pleasnt lady in New Deli {MS support}, using upall of my "free" support
calls. I now have a problem at startup. The Machine POST's ok with no
bleeps but instead of flashing the 2 Windows XP screens during bootstrap,
reboots and displays the option menus of Safe etc or start Windows as normal.
The action taken at this point varies between boot up in Safe mode then
restart which goes ok, or simply Start as normal which also goes ok - both of
these sometimes!!

Once re booted, the machine perfroms fine and can be shut down and started
up withoput problem - till the next morning! Its as if - overnight - it
looses the way to correctly boot.

I'm confused Can anyone suggest what is going on?

Are you sure you didn't create a dual boot installation?
Your comment about "flashing the 2 Windows XP screens"
raises the issue in my mind.

Have you set some custom start-up using MSCONFIG during the
support calls that needs to be unchecked to use normal start
up?

Jim thanks for your response. I don't believe I did but Ill check msconfig
et al. The reference to 2 screens flashing is my shorthand to describe the
sequence of booting up which I watch very closely nowadays!
ie POST - screen blank - progress strip across bottom of screen -blank -
1st Windows screen - blank - 2nd Windows scree - blank - final desktop
screen.

Instead of this it goes to SAFE Mode etc.

I do however acceptthe problem is more likely to be something like you
suggest rather than the black magic I am believing at the moment!

Ill persevere

Possibly the CMOS battery (if it has one) on the motherboard is loose,
faulty or just gone flat.
One of the old Windows98 PCs here had several niggly problems which
disappeared once the CMOS battery on the motherboard was renewed.

Danny - an interesting avenue of investigation which I'll loo into. I dont
appear to have any problems with system date or time, but I do make regular
checks for time via the inrternet. I would have thought that the POST checks
might have signalled this as a problem, but Ill do the snooping anyhow -
thanks

I understand your "2 screen" reference now. Your computer
was setup to boot Windows and then automatically logon your
user account, skipping the logon screen and going straight
to your desktop..

You can view the Event log by right clicking on My Computer
and selecting Manage. Then the Event Viewer is listed on
the left-hand menu.

You can check the way users logon from Control Panel/Users,
it is possible that your problem could be from the user
logon sequence.
