WinXP freeing with external connection

Recently, during problematic dial-up modem contacts (with remote data
devices) when the connection has dropped or been terminated during contact,
WinXPpro has frozen. NO keyboard, mouse ctl, atl+del, nothing.

The same thing has started to happen when I am using any sort of constant
incoming data over my broadband connection – streaming video, skype phone
etc.

Different modems, different applications using them. The only way to regaing
control is to reboot via the reset button.

2 questions

1.. Any ideas on why this might be happening – is there a common factor
between the two external connections that may be causing this
2.. is there a maintenance app in XP (or out there somewhere) which will
record what applications are running and which has caused the problem
Thanks

Usually my modem is connecting to a GSM modem linked to a dataloggers.
Sometimes it is connecting to a hard wired modem connected to a datalogger.

Problems with the connection and a break in contact - fine. These things are
all over the globe, so the connection quality varies. But this shout not
cause XP to totally freeze up.

As I said, the same symptoms are occurring with my broadband connection to
the net - this really puzzles me.

Both are recent, and I can't think of a specific hardware/ software change
which coincided with this.
