WinXP copies/moves files to wrong folder

Often when I try to copy or move a file into a different folder, (drag w/ right mouse button from right pane to left pane), the file ends up in the wrong folder (usually one or two folders below the intended folder).

This is a bug in WinXP. I costs productivity due to time spent searching for misplaced files.

In Win95/98, Explorer highlights the destination folder when the source file is dragged onto it. This provides excellent feedback and confirmation of the copy/move destination.

In WinXP, this action has been lost. The source file and source folder are highlighted in grey, but the destination folder is no longer highlighted in any manner. When you release the mouse button and the context sensitive menu (Copy, Move Here, Create Shortcuts Here, Cancel) appears, you have no verification of the destination folder (like you do in Win 95/98). Only the source folder and filename are highlighted (in grey).

I also notice that if you drag with the left mouse button (move),
the destination folder is highlighted in blue as it should be.

This is a serious defect in basic file management which needs to be corrected.

Anyone know if this defect is corrected in SP2?

Michael,

This is a long shot, so don't be offended if I am missing the mark. I did
this once upon a moon age in my ignorance

As you drag and drop, are you by chance aligning the top file (of the files
to be copied or move) with the place you want it to go. OR as you move the
'ghosted files' over the diretory or whatever, do you look behind the ghosted
image of the files to be copied to the directory beneath, which will be
highlighted as to which one it will go to. What I am saying is that as you
drag the file from the right to the left. Can you see the selected director
turn 'boxed blue' beneath the ghosted files. If so is this your intended
directory? I once alligned the top of the selection and found that my files
ended up below that directory. (I was more used to typing in commads in DOS).

I am most likely barking mad and insulting to your skills but just sometimes
someone says something stupid that works. My wife did it to me after a weeks
work only the other night. Boy did I feel a twit (I didn't admit it worked
though).

Godd luck and sorry if I am wrong.
