I have a very ancient PC which serves as backup/email/internet to my main
machine. It has given sterling service up to now and currently WinME is
installed on this machine which has started to play up a little.

Specs of the ancient machine:
MS-6118 main board
Pentium 2 processor (266Mhz)
Fujitsu MPC3064AT 6.4GB IDE Hard Disk
Windows ME installed

I was wondering whether I could buy a new bigger hard drive and install
Windows XP on this machine?
Would the old board and processor support Windows XP or is it just not
possible and would a new main board be needed?
Many Thanks

You would virtually have to replace everything but the power cord in
order to get Windows XP to run on that machine.

And by the time you piecemeal everything together you will have spent
more than the current price for a complete new system including OEM
Windows XP.

Good luck

Thanks for your thoughts. I will not bother with the XP upgrade in the light
of what you say. I will try to correct the faults on WinME and when the
machine finally does blow I will replace the whole machine.
