winlogon thrashing!

I noticed a marked slowdown in reponse time using XP.
Taskmanager showed winlogon.exe spiking to 100 percent in
seconds continuously. What could be causing this? Virus
scan is clean.

When was the last time you did a good cleaning like deleting cookies, on and
off line temporary files? Run MSCONNFIG and check the startup tab to disable
unnecessary programs from loading.
Also, download Ad-aware to check for malware:

Thanks, but nothing helps. I've got 97 files in the cookie
folder. I've run Ad-aware AND spybot search and destroy. I
need a clean version of winlogon.exe. from whence?
