winlogon.exe

I've just bought a new IBM M42 2,4 gHz P4 w/ 512 DDR RAM
and it's running on WinXP. One would have thought that XP
would run smoothly on such a machine but no.

Winlogon.exe logs up most of my CPU usage, frequently
taking up between 30% and 80% of it. This is extreemly
anoying since it slows everything else down. It takes
about a minute just to launch Internet Explorer.

I've updated everything from Windows Update, yet the
problem persists. Is there anything anyone can reconmend
me on how to fix this problem. The machine is virtually
useless.

There could be a few problems. Check your CPU % at the
bottom of the Task Manager in Processes tab. This should
tell you if winlogon.exe is actually taking up real CPU
or not. If that percentage is very high, then you might
have some problem I don't know about. But if it's only at
2-4% or so, then you shouldn't worry. I believe Microsoft
has released a bunk update that is causing computers to
slow down a LOT due to page file resources being
improperly used. I have this same problem, and it's
paralyzed me in essence. Complain to them if you find
that your CPU% is actually pretty low. winlogon.exe using
a high percentage of a small percentage means virtually
nothing in the long run.
