Winlogon crash is causing reboot

A friend of mine sent a message to me.

Seems apparent when he starts up his computer, he gets a error message as
the desktop attempts to load:
" Winlogon.exe encountered a problem and needs to close." After a few
seconds, it disappears on its own and shuts down. On restart , gives him the
same message. PC seems to restart again aimlessly in a loop.

Is there a work around for this? I'd like to help him fix this problem.

You're friend hasn't provided enough information to get focused help. What
is the history of the problem? Did it just start? If so what changed
between the time things worked and when they didn't? What is the malware
status of the computer and how does he check that? Where any windows
updates applied? Did he try any of the other options on the Advanced Boot
Options menu reached by tapping F8 as the computer boots which gives options
such as Last Known Good Configuration and Safe Mode?

Check out some of the links from a Google search.

Hi Rock... As soon as I hear back from him (I told him I needed more info)
I'll post what else there is going on. I did a search for Winlogon.exe of
MSKB and the message " ... has encountered a problem and needs to close" but
nothing turned up. I asked him which version of XP (sp1 -sp2), if he had
installed any new programs recently, made any changes to his PC
configuration, or had tried to log on in safe mode.

Ok, if he can get into safe mode then try a system restore.
