I believe I have aquired a virus. My computer locked up or froze one
morning, I restarted it, and the reboot will not complete now. The computer
goes as far as the desktop background, but then neither the icons nor the
START button for Windows come up!? I then get a message that "wininet.dll"
cannot be found, and re-instaling this feature may fix the problem. I don't
know what to do from there. Please help. Am I going to lose everything I
had on my computer?

Two part reply...

Part 1
-------------

* Download noahdfear's SmitFraud and SpyAxe removal tool -- SmitRem.exe
http://noahdfear.geekstogo.com/click counter/click.php?id=1

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic36868.html

Part 2
-------------

* Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot the PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive PDF help
file. http://www.ik-cs.com/multi-av.htm

Download AVG/AVast/Addaware/Sypbot to a new folder. Disable system
restore. Boot to safe mode and install/run each.

Let them delete the nasties. Reboot normally. Run each app again, update
first.

OK, but how do I get past the error message at startup? The desktop
background, no start button, and no icons is as far as start up goes!

Use Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up Task Manager and select New Task. Then you
can try running explorer.exe (probably won't work, but it might). You
can also run any programs you need by putting in the path to them. For
example, C:\program.exe.

If this is too difficult - and there is no question that it can be
tricky to clean up a badly infested computer - then take the machine to
a professional computer repair shop (not your local version of
BigStoreUSA).

Good luck,

Malke

I agree with Malke.

Has this problem been solved? I have the same problem and I even cannot use
explorer.exe in Task Manager. How to solve it?
