I have the 6 disks done. I started up my boot disk #1 and it was successful,
disk
2 failed saying that it could not install ntkrnlmp.exe. So the whole thing
failed.

What can I do now

Are you trying to boot into a computer that you can't boot into?

If so then here are some other options (rather than messing around with the
6 boot disks deal):

If you have a broadband internet connection (cable, dsl):
http://www.ubcd4win.com/

If you don't:
http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

These programs run the same software but UBCD has a more features. They will
allow you to create a boot CD instead of floppy boot disks. They provide
network support so you can go online to get files/programs to fix your
system. Plus they provide basic XP tools like Check Disk, McAfee Virus
Scanner (need to download some files for PE Builder), file manager (like
explorer), and lots more.

Pick one, download it, and follow the instructions in the How to Build
section.

My computer boots up fine. The problem I have is I need to rebuild the OS
because my registry was messed with and I have many missing or corrupt system
files thanks to Nortons goback application. I would like to reformat my hard
drive to Normal operation.

Have you tried a Repair Install to see if it helps? It might be able to
solve your problem without having to wipe out your system and lose all of
your personal files. Info on it here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx

Another possibility is that disk #2 of your boot disk set is bad, or maybe
your download of the boot disk program is corrupted. You can try replacing
disk #2, re-download the boot disk program from Microsoft, and try it again.

If this doesn't work then you can resort to a Windows 98 Boot disk to format
the hard drive (do a quick format as it will format it for Fat32, and XP
uses NTFS by default - it can use Fat32, but it is not recommended as system
performance will suffer slightly). You can get it here:
http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm - choose the Windows 98 SE OEM version.
From here, after you format your drive, you should be able to boot with your
XP CD and do a clean install. Here is a good place to get information on
performing a clean install of XP:
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html

Hope any of this helps.
