WindowsXP Black Screen

D

Darkwing

I had installed Service Pack 2 and the Cumulitive Service Pack, but
later decided that I did not want them. I used System Restore to back
to the period I had installed. When the computer restarted, it stopped
when it got to a black screen. Apparently, WindowsXP is unable to
start. What can I do to fix this problem? While keeping the
information on my Hard Drive intact? Thank you.

Everything I tried at that link either didn't work, or made this more
complicated...I tried to do the XP Repair install, but had to stop
because the Repair Option was not available. Only Install, Add, or
Delete. I tried the Charlie White article for crashes, but had to stop
because when I restarted the computer, I was back to the black screen.
So now all of my original startup files are deleted, but copied into a
temp file -and I don't know if that's a goood thing or bad thing- and
I can't do anything with them.

I really hope that I don't end up having to lose all of my files. My
entire life was basically in that computer- files, pictues, videos,
etc....I used to love computers, but that love is starting to fade.
Please help!

2. You are not in the right place if it only reads: Install, Add or Delete

Repair the Windows XP Installation - Note: You will forfeit all MS Updates.

Configure your computer to start from the CD-ROM drive. For more information
about how to do this, please refer to your computer's documentation or
contact your computer manufacturer.

Insert your Windows XP compact disc (CD) into your CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM
drive, and then restart your computer.

(You can also boot with a Windows 98/Me Startup disk with CD support and run
WINNT.EXE in the I386 folder on the CD)

When the "Press any key to boot from CD" message is displayed on your
screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

When you see the following message displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen,
press ENTER: To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

At this point an option to press R to enter the Recovery Console is
displayed. Do not select this option.

On the Windows XP Licensing Agreement screen, press F8 to agree to the
license agreement. Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is
selected in the box, and then press the R key to repair Windows XP. Follow
the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.

3. You don't do a System Restore to remove SP2, you uninstall it.
