Hey lookie I'm back. Anyway I have yet another question.
All of my questions were answered yesterday (but not from
here I had to discover the solutions for myself because he
who has the problem is truily the only one that can find
ones answer). Anyway, I need to figure out how to get
into windows xp through dos. Well what i really wanna do
is replace a file thats been corrupted yet everytime i try
to do this it says, "access denied". So heres the real
question ahem, "While in dos how would I put my password
in to navagate through my xp files without the xp disk?"
Anyone know? This is my only option. Please type out the
correct line of command so i can gain access to copy over
that corrupted file... thank you

Hi

Which particular file are you trying to replace? If it is a system file try typing the following from Start>Run - you may need to have your XP CD to hand:

sfc /scannow

I'm trying to replace the NTSF.SYS file and the DMBOOT.SYS

If your hard drive is NTFS then there is no easy way of doing this.

It could be done if you have a second computer that is also running
Windows XP.

Remove the hard drive from this computer and install it temporarily as
a second hard drive in the other machine. Then you should be able to
replace the files and then return the drive to its original machine.

Good luck

If you have the system on an NTFS disk, then DOS will be no help: if it
is on FAT32 you could use a Win98 startup floppy. There is no true,
independently bootable DOS in XP.

You *might*, depending on what file it is, be able to do it by booting
to the menu with F8 and using Safe Mode - Command Prompt only; you
certainly should by booting an XP CD and using the immediate R -
Recovery - option.

There is also a program 'InUse' which you should be able to find if you
search the Downloads section of the Microsoft site, which allows you to
name a file to be used to replace another at the next boot of the system
