Help! I have an HP Pavilion computer that I purchased
refurbished. The HP Pavilion series came with XP
preinstalled on a partition and no disks were included.
Now I need a new hard drive and HP will not provide the
XP restore disks because it was a refurbished machine. I
have a valid XP serial number and certificate of
authenticity that came with the computer. Is there any
way that I could just purchase the upgrade version of XP
and do a clean install on a new hard drive?

Thanks for any help.

nope, if HP provide you wish the machine they are the only company who can
give you a CD. you will need to purchase a new copy of XP if HP will not
give you one.

All you need to use Upgrade is "an" old version of a Windows disk. Win 98
upwards will do I think. It will not ask for a license number for the
previous Windows - all it wants to do is see it.

You'll need a retail version of a previous operating system.... either 95,
98, 98se, ME etc. There is no upgrade from 2000 to XP Home but it does
qualify for XP Pro.

Although you cannot technicall upgrade from 95, if you are doing a clean
install, the 95 CD will work.

You'll boot straight from the XP upgrade CD and when it asks for the
previous qualifying version, simply swap CDs over and let it 'read' the
previous version. When it says you do indeed qualify, then swap CDs back to
the XP Upgrade CD and let it continue.

Just borrow a disk from someone, make sure its the version
you have, Use your key. You could purchase a OEM for
$80.00 really not a reason to.
