Hello,

I am trying to upgrade my Windows ME computer to Windows XP. In the process
of preparing my computer for installation, right before the boot disk
installs windows XP, i get a message saying that it cannot install windows XP
because of a "blocking issue". That issue is then stated on my screen as
Microsoft Shared Fax Client. It instructs me to remove this off of my
computer by going through the control panel. Long story short, I have done
so by removing everything within my "add/remove" column that said anything
about Fax's and I still cannot install Windows XP for this very reason. I
have checked and re-checked the "add/remove" software list from my control
panel and the same message still keeps coming up.

What should I do in order to successfully install Windows XP onto my desktop
computer?

I have a fax printer that I had recently removed the software for off of my
computer so that I could continue the upgrading process. Nevertheless, the
hardware is till hooked up to my computer. Is this a problem? My system
doesn't send me any errors stating so. I didn't want my
fax/scannner/copier/printer to be taken off of my computer, I just wanted to
upgrade from ME to XP. ANy suggestions?

Probably the best thing you can do, if the XP CD gets this far, is select the
re-format process to either an NTFS (recommended) or FAT32 format during the
installation process. That way the XP installation has a blank drive to
install to. Naturally you'd want to back up your current data (not system
files) to either another hard-drive or a CD or DVD.
XP provides FAX support automatically so you chouldn't have to worry about
your fax setup.
Luck with this!

If you have fax service from "Installed Windows Components" in Add/Remove
Programs, maybe uninstall that first.

If it printer shows as fax printer, I think you should unistall and
reinstall once XP is loaded.

Is there a way that I can remedy this situation without formatting anything?

Well, I don't have the full information of your computer setup; Dixonian69
does offer one possible solution.
Remember one other thing, if your current drive is formatted as FAT, XP
prefers FAT32 or NTFS. Eventually, you may want to consider this for more
trouble-free operation.

Disconnect the hardware. For all you know, the OS is reloading the software
when it discovers the fax printer hardware. This may or may not help, but
it is a good idea to disconnect everything except the keyboard, mouse, and
monitor. That is the bare minimum and leaves nothing to chance.

From memory, on Windows XP there is a button on the left of the
Add/Remove programs windows which called something like "Add/Remove
Windows Component". You may have to remove it from there, if there is
similar on ME.

Another thing you could do is to see if the Fax service is bound to any
of your Network cards.

Cheers,

Cliff
